SINGAPORE: A simple idea born out of frustration on the Hospital floor has officially caught the attention of the medical elite.

Previous to the application, nurses and hospital staff were using paper-based forms to document what was in emergency trolleys, paperwork that was unable to present a clear overview of trolley compliance and would often go missing.

That is where the new Check-ER app steps in.

The new Check-ER app created by hospital nurse manager Stephanie Little, alongside the Toowoomba Hospital’s local ICT Services team, and assists staff in instantly indicating whether a critical item on the emergency trolley is present, missing, damaged, or expired, to streamline the process.

When reflecting on the app’s birthplace, Ms Little said the project blossomed entirely out of a gap she identified in the system and allowed her to incorporate technology in a progressively digital healthcare environment.

“I think it just came out of a need,” Ms Little said.

“Because our health system is moving into that digital space, I thought it was a really good opportunity to embrace that and to start with something that is easy to put in place and get people to adapt.”

Attending the Clinical Excellence Queensland Showcase in Brisbane last week, Ms Little was invited to speak at the event, an opportunity she holds with great pride.

“It was really nice to be recognised and be able to represent the health service with the app,” Ms Little said.

With the app already proving a major hit locally and turning heads at a state level, Ms Little hopes Toowoomba’s homegrown innovation will soon change how emergency departments operate right across Queensland.

“I think to have it recognised in that way does open a lot of doors to have it potentially in other hospitals, which is so exciting,” she said.

“It could really benefit a lot of emergency trolleys and it could really help other clinicians in other spaces.”
